As Executive Director of the Southern Growth Policies Board, Mr. Abernathy is a specialist in economics and competitiveness and provides economic development research and advice for 13 Southern states.

Born in Dallas, N.C., Ted received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; his Master’s from Johns Hopkins University, is a graduate of the Economic Development Institute and is an Eisenhower Fellow for global economics.

The focus of his 32-year economic development career has included work for cities, counties, regions and the private sector. Most recently he served as Executive Vice President and COO for the Research Triangle Regional Partnership. While there Ted developed and implemented national award winning strategic plans that focused on collaboration models and innovative cluster development.

For the past 3 years, Ted has been Executive Director of the Southern Growth Policies Board, a 40-year old public policy think tank that provides economic development research and advice for 13 Southern states. Southern Growth specializes in the areas of technology and innovation, globalization, talent, civic engagement, cluster development, collaboration, and leadership. Ted speaks to over 100 groups annually on topics ranging from future global economic trends to changing leadership models.

Ted’s passion is all things international. In the past few years he has traversed treetops on rope bridges in the Malaysian rainforest, sailed in the out-islands of the Bahamas, spelunked in the caves of Middle Caicos, and four-wheeled in Mongolia.
