CAC Project To Identify Transit Needs Of Elderly And Disabled

Posted 09/12/2013

PlanET-supported project will address barriers and establish priorities for improvement

Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee (CAC) was recently awarded a grant to identify barriers that prevent the elderly and people who are disabled from accessing transportation. CAC needs your help with this effort.

The project, called Inclusive Planning for Transportation, provides a variety of opportunities for input from the community. And while CAC especially wants to hear from seniors and people with disabilities, all area residents can weigh in. Maybe you assist elderly or disabled family members, someone at church, a neighbor, or a co-worker who has struggled with access to public transportation?

CAC will conduct a large community meeting, 30 small group sessions, and offer online surveys to gather local input.

The community meeting will be held October 2nd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the O’Connor Center, 611 Winona Street in Knoxville. A continental breakfast will be provided at 8:30 a.m.

The brief online survey can be accessed here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/tp4all

The survey can be completed in about 10 minutes, but there is no limit for those needing extra time.

Once barriers are identified, CAC will offer recommendations and priorities for improvement. Also out of this project, emphasis will be paid to better engaging the elderly and people who are disabled in local transportation planning efforts.

CAC’s project is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Federal Transit Administration, Community Transportation Association of America, and Plan East Tennessee (PlanET). The grant focuses on the PlanET region which includes Anderson, Blount, Knox, Loudon, and Union counties.

If you have trouble accessing the online survey, would like a paper copy of the survey, or have questions about the community meetings, please call CAC at (865) 524-0319 or e-mail karen.estes@cactrans.org
