Outreach Series 1 Meeting in Box focused on the strengths and challenges of the East Tennessee Region and on specific community the participants reside in. Over 200 people from 20 organizations participated in this first round of input gathering via a Meeting in Box.

Community Strengths:
  1. We have good senior citizen centers and instructors in Union County.
  2. Maynardville is a close-knit community/sense of community.
  3. We take pride in the work of your military veterans.
Regional Strengths:
  1. The area’s scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities are assets.
  2. The area’s people are very hospitable.
  3. The area’s hospitals and other medical services provide good health care.
Community Challenges:
  1. The community’s infrastructure (roads, water, sewer, etc.) need to be upgraded.
  2. Jobs and new businesses are need to bolster the economy.
  3. Substance abuse is a major problems that needs to be addressed.
  4. More volunteers are needed in the community for a variety of causes and projects.
Regional Challenges:
  1. Although most of the area is well-served by transportation, better transportation facilities for the entire area are needed.
  2. There needs to be more transportation for seniors.
  3. Better social services for seniors are needed.
  4. Even with the good care provided by the region’s health care providers, more convenient health care services are needed.
