Outreach Series 1 Meeting in Box focused on the strengths and challenges of the East Tennessee Region and on specific community the participants reside in. Over 200 people from 20 organizations participated in this first round of input gathering via a Meeting in Box.

Community Strengths:
  1. Landscape
  2. Your neighbors know you
  3. English classes are available
Regional Strengths:
  1. Green areas and environmental protection
  2. Weather
  3. Potential for Integration
Notes on Strengths: Also noted as Community Strengths: • Calmness • Safety • Space between a house and the next one • Services are nearby and accessible (infrastructure) • Telecommunications • Good health service Also noted as Regional Strengths: • Friendly and polite community • There are no pollution problems • Bike ways and sidewalks • Recreation areas • Cultural activities
Community Challenges:
For Participants from Knox County:
  1. Economic development: opportunity for new business and more jobs
  2. Taxes - need to assess them
  3. Transportation
Regional Challenges:
  1. No sidewalks
  2. Transportation is not reliable
  3. Job (and opportunities) are not maximized
Notes on Challenges: Also noted as Community Challenges: • Sidewalks • Ambulances / Firemen are expensive (second responder) • Services to encourage Small Businesses, English classes for Hispanics, and that they integrate • Integration of Hispanic communities in the system Also noted as Regional Challenges: • Economic development is needed • More equality among races and even among Latinos - Division by zones • Poor city planning (poor urban development) • Taxes • Educational opportunities for Hispanics and in general • Discrimination • Classes for Hispanic women and undocumented people so that they know their rights (promote)
