Regional Outreach Series Meeting in a Box Results

Meeting Code: RFS2-KB-0711
Meeting Date: 7/11/2012
Host: Oak Ridge Community Development
Group: City Council of Oak Ridge & City Boards
Participants: Table 4 - 7
Facilitator: Kathryn Baldwin
Economy and Workforce:
  1. Growth in community colleges that are adapted to train the changing workforce
  2. There will be business clusters closer to home, with spin-off business growth and the area will become more desirable for technical companies
Transportation and Infrastructure:
  1. Park and ride locations available
  2. Alternative fuel adaptability
Housing and Neighborhoods:
  1. More mixed use with slightly higher density along transportation corridors; community parks, dog parks, walking trails within 3 mile radius of all neighborhoods
  2. More renovation and less new construction – improving existing infrastructure
Healthy Communities:
  1. Must push healthier lifestyles
  2. Must demand pharmaceutical and medical cost reform
  1. City maintenance of greenways & parks
  2. Retain and maintain greenspace (reuse – alternative ways for parking lot construction) , and
    a.    Continue to regionally push for clean air and water
Additional Comments: Why will people want to stay, move to, or visit the region?
  • Lower taxes
  • Less regulation on development by private businesses
  • This region remains diverse – between the quality of life and the landscape, people will find this region desirable.
  • I believe people all over the country are trying to find ways to slow down and reclaim their roots.  East Tennessee makes that a possibility.
  • Good, strong economy
  • Diverse population
  • Close feel to amenities without being crowded
  • Lower stress than many areas of the country
  • Much more of the natural environment preserved than in most regions east of the Mississippi River

Other issues related to the future of the region?
  • What’s good for Oak Ridge and Anderson County may not be beneficial to the other four counties.  Anderson County should prioritize our future growth on our own before collaborating with other communities.
  • Our region needs to fight to maintain our innovative resources in the future; like Y-12 and ORNL.  These are major focus points that we need for a thriving future.
  • Lack of manufacturing
  • Too much reliability on DOE, specifically the Oak Ridge economy
  • Income diversity between counties in the PlanET region needs to be reduced
